2015 BMW 2 Series 228i

There are quite a few models that compare to the Audi A3, but one of the closest competitors is definitely the BMW 2 Series, but more specifically the BMW 228i, which is on the same level as the A3 in terms of performance and luxury. Since the vehicles are so similar, we thought it would be helpful to take a look at how they compare to one another, in an effort to make the decision making process a bit easier for you.

At first, determining which of the vehicles is better suited for your needs may seem like a daunting task, but believe us, with closer inspection of the 2015 Audi A3 vs 2015 BMW 2 Series, it’s quite clear to see that there are some differences between the two vehicles. Neither holds a significant advantage over the other, but when it comes to the capabilities that matter most to buyers in the market for a luxurious yet affordable sports car, there is no arguing that the 2015 Audi A3 offers more appealing capabilities.

Equipped to Perform

In terms of performance, the A3 and BMW 228i are on similar levels—when properly equipped, that is. It does seem that the 2 Series model holds an edge over the A3 when you consider the fact that it has 240 horsepower compared to the 220 generated by the Audi offering, but the difference is hardly noticeable. Both of the engines displace two liters across four cylinders and come turbocharged allowing them to get such high outputs. The similarity between the engines also means they operate nearly identically.

Model Options

When comparing these two luxury sports cars, it’s important to keep in mind that there are quite a few differences between them, as both of the models offer up a range of model options. This is where some of the benefits of the 2015 Audi A3 really stand out. For one, the A3 is available with the two-liter that we mentioned earlier, but it also has another engine that displaces two liters, but runs on diesel, rather than standard gasoline. The BMW 2 Series, on the other hand, does not have a diesel-powered sports car.

Top Safety Pick

Another highlight of the A3 is that it earned a 2015 Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), after scoring the highest rating of good in all five tests, including the rigorous small overlap front test. The A3 is one of just a few luxury vehicles that was able to achieve the highest possible IIHS rating, and as no model in the BMW 2 Series was able to earn the same rating, there is no arguing that when it comes to safety, the 2015 Audi A3 offers a significant advantage over the 2 Series.
