One question that we often receive has to do with the difference between 4MATIC and quattro AWD, so we thought that we would break down each of the systems.

Seeing as Audi and Mercedes-Benz are two fairly fierce competitors, it comes as no surprise that both of their all-wheel drive systems are strikingly similar. Both are able to deliver the same functionality, and although they operate in different ways, the goals of both systems are the same. Both increase traction to all four wheels and allow consumers to drive with confidence in even the most unfavorable of conditions.

One of the similarities between both 4MATIC and quattro all-wheel drive is that they are not simply added as an afterthought. Both of the systems are fully integrated into the drivetrains, which means that, unlike more common four-wheel drive systems, all four of the wheels are powered at all times. As there are no additional outside systems directing power to the wheels, fuel efficiency doesn’t take much of a cut at all.

Another similarity between the two systems is that they have a torque-sensing center differential that allows a percentage of torque from the engine to be directed to the rear set of wheels. When the traction needs change, the system is able to monitor those changes and adjust accordingly. With the differential in place, power can be sent to either one of the rear wheels, making traction available at all times.

Both the quattro and 4MATIC all-wheel drive systems are able to deliver impressive levels of performance in the winter, but it is worth noting that they perform even better when equipped with the right tires, as the systems can only do so much. They can not increase traction when there is no traction to be had.
