Mercedes Fools Us All With AMG Sprinter63 Performance Van

Is the Mercedes-AMG Sprinter63 S Performance Van Real?

Mercedes-Benz is a brand that takes things seriously, but yesterday, just 24 hours shy of April Fool’s Day, the luxury automaker has proved that they do possess a sense of humor. They unveiled renderings of a vehicle that they have dubbed the Mercedes-AMG Sprinter63 S, a performance van that can take you and all of your cargo from zero to sixty in a matter of seconds. Unfortunately, the AMG-tuned Sprinter isn’t real.

There have already been some rumors floating around about the Mercedes-AMG Sprinter63 S, and as the renderings appear extremely realistic, it’s not difficult to see exactly why so many are believing this van to be real, but with a closer look under the hood of the supposed new AMG offering, it’s clear to see that this is nothing more than a fantasy. That’s not to say that there wouldn’t be a market for the van, however.

According to the automaker, the Sprinter63 S comes equipped with an AMG-tuned sport suspension that allows it to attack corners, and with the new handcrafted 4.0-liter biturbo V8 of the tuning division. If you’re wondering, yes, it is the same engine that powers the newest Mercedes AMG-GT. When equipped with the powerful V8, the performance van has the ability to generate as much as 503 horsepower. As Mercedes says, it’s “ready to haul a lot more than just cargo.” If only this beast of a van was real.

There are a few hints to the fact that the Sprinter63 is nothing more than a hoax. For one, the high roof is a dead giveaway. If Mercedes were really looking to build a performance van, aerodynamics would be a major concern with that towering roof. The other clue is that within the paragraph-long press release that the automaker sent out about the performance van, they said, “It’s exactly what you’d expect of our high performance division, if they were given the keys to a Sprinter van.” The key word here is, of course, if.

So, unfortunately the Mercedes-AMG Sprinter63 S performance van is not real. We do have a feeling that there will be a lot of people asking the automaker to bring it to production, and as we said, there definitely is a market out there for a 503-horsepower van. However, once again, Mercedes takes things seriously, and the demand is not likely going to be high enough to justify a production model of the AMG-tuned van.

For the time being, we’ll just have to settle for the renderings.
